How About Silence?

Now, that the conclave is over, I have one wish for the next conclave, which hopefully will be many, many years distant: no more American press conferences or daily briefings for the next conclave.

The concerted attempt to act like one big national bloc attracting press attention was tasteless, obnoxious, and foolish. Apparently, the College of Cardinals seems to have shared that view of the matter (see this Italian language link and its clunky Google translation, although the gist is clear). I hope the lesson has been learned: there is nothing wrong with avoiding the spotlight. Francis I seems to incarnate that example of clerical self-effacement. Let the others imitate the new Pope.

Update: See this La Stampa link (especially 4th paragraph) for corroboration of the above.
